 Daruma-Daishi (Bodhidharma) is considered the first patriarch of Zen in China. He originally come from the south of India and was said to be the third prince of Koshikoku.? He studied Buddhism under Hannyatara and received from him the transmission of Zen. Daruma-Daishi then went to China(circa 520 AD), and after an interview with Emperor Butei, continued his practice at Shorin-ji on Mt.Suzan. It is said that he stayed there for nine years, meditating facing a blank wall in a cave behind the Temple.
